How Hard Is Your Water?

Water hardness varies dramatically across southern Colorado. Here's what we're working with.

Black Forest / Falcon / Peyton

10-25 GPG
Well Water — Very Hard

Denver Basin aquifer wells across El Paso County. Hardness varies wildly well-to-well, often paired with iron, manganese, sulfur, uranium, or radium. Multi-stage treatment is typically required — not a one-size softener.

Pueblo

10.5 GPG
Very Hard

Colorado's hardest municipal water. Sourced from Arkansas River and Pueblo Reservoir. A water softener is practically a necessity here.

Fountain / Security

10-20 GPG
Hard to Very Hard

Seasonal blend of Pueblo Reservoir and wells. Also a PFAS concern area near Peterson Space Force Base.

Colorado Springs

~1.8 GPG
Soft (City Water)

Colorado Springs city water is naturally soft — sourced from snowmelt and mountain reservoirs. The main concerns are chlorine taste, TTHMs, and PFAS screening rather than hardness.

Castle Rock

6.6-10.8 GPG
Moderately Hard to Hard

Denver Basin aquifer wells produce mineral-rich water. The town discourages salt-based softeners.

Monument

7-10 GPG
Moderately Hard to Hard

Denver Basin well water community. Many homes on private wells need additional iron and sediment treatment.

Woodland Park

3.5-6.4 GPG
Moderate

Local wells and Twin Lakes sources. Mountain community with varying well water quality.

Got Questions? We've Got Answers

How much does a water softener cost in Colorado Springs?
Water softener installation typically runs between $810 and $2,500 in the Colorado Springs area, depending on system size, brand, and your home's plumbing. We provide free in-home estimates so you know the exact cost before any work begins. We also offer financing options.
Is Colorado Springs water hard?
Colorado Springs city water is actually soft — CSU sources primarily from snowmelt and mountain reservoirs, averaging around 1.8 GPG (30.7 mg/L). If you're on city water, a water softener is likely unnecessary for hardness. However, chlorine taste, disinfection byproducts (TTHMs), and PFAS screening are legitimate concerns worth testing. Private well owners in areas like Black Forest, Falcon, and Peyton may have harder water depending on their aquifer.
Do I need a water softener in Colorado?
If your water tests above 7 GPG (grains per gallon), a water softener can significantly reduce scale buildup, extend appliance life, and improve your skin and hair. For Pueblo residents at 10.5 GPG, it's practically essential. Even moderately hard water (3-7 GPG) can benefit from treatment.
Is there PFAS in Colorado Springs water?
Colorado Springs Utilities tested for 29 PFAS compounds in late 2024/early 2025 and found none above reporting limits in the municipal supply. However, private wells in Fountain, Security, and Widefield near Peterson Space Force Base have been severely contaminated, with some testing over 1,370 ppt. If you're on a private well in these areas, testing is critical.
What's included in the free water test?
Our complimentary in-home test covers hardness, pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), iron, chlorine, and other key parameters. We provide a printed report with your results and explain what each number means. No obligation, no pressure. If you want more advanced testing (PFAS, heavy metals, bacteria), we can arrange that too.
What's the difference between a water softener and a water filter?
A water softener specifically removes calcium and magnesium (the minerals that make water "hard") through ion exchange. A water filter removes contaminants like chlorine, sediment, PFAS, and other chemicals. Many homes benefit from both. We'll recommend what your specific water actually needs based on your test results.
